Between now and New Year's, the Zilker Park within walking distance of Bouldin and South Lamar is easiest to understand by asking who holds the keys to each building. The Barton Springs bathhouse rotunda is still with its contractor. The Zilker Botanical Garden went back to the City on October 1. The Zilker Clubhouse is a construction site, and the Barton Springs Road Bridge is still on paper.
So the holiday season at Zilker will mostly happen outdoors. The Holiday Tree, the Trail of Lights, the pool and the train don't depend on any of those buildings, and they're on schedule. The rest of this post covers each building in turn and then the outdoor calendar that works around them.
The Rotunda Is Close, But The Keys Haven't Changed Hands
The Joan Means Khabele Bathhouse at Barton Springs Pool partially reopened on October 28, 2025. That reopening covered the renovated restrooms and showers, reached from the pool side. The rotunda and the west-side work area stayed closed. A year later, the rotunda is still the missing piece. The City's project page still lists Fall 2026 for finishing construction.
Opening to the public is a separate step from finishing construction. In early October, KUT reported that substantial completion was about a month out. The City's project manager added that "the dates tend to move a bit each week." After the contractor, SpawGlass, hands over the building, the City expects to need about another month to set up exhibits, prepare the aquarium and train staff. The same report put the earliest likely public opening in December. No opening date has been set.
Barton Springs Pool keeps its regular schedule during the bathhouse work: 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily, except Thursdays, when it closes for cleaning from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. A separate project on the pool's eastern retaining wall finished clearing trees and vegetation in September. Assessment and design run through December, and repairs are expected to start in early 2027. The City says the pool should stay open during that work.
The Garden Changed Hands Overnight
The Botanical Garden handoff happened much faster. On October 1, the City of Austin took over full management of the Zilker Botanical Garden from the Zilker Botanical Garden Conservancy. The nonprofit had run the garden's programming, admissions and gift shop since 2019. KUT reported that the Conservancy voted in September not to renew its agreement. The Conservancy's chair, Michael Garcia, explained the decision to KUT:
"With a challenging fundraising and revenue landscape and mounting operational expenses, it became clear this was the right decision."
The City says it will honor current Conservancy memberships through their end dates. It also says it will keep its partnership with the Austin Area Garden Council, the group of garden clubs that has worked with the City on the garden for more than 50 years. KXAN reported that the City is also considering what a future partnership with the Conservancy could look like.
The handoff also came with a closure. The City shut the 28-acre garden on October 1 for abatement, renovation and maintenance, with reopening scheduled for October 16. Its notice warned that the main building could stay closed longer. The City's garden page lists fall and winter hours of 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $6 for Austin residents and $8 for nonresidents. The garden closes for Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
Two dates on the City calendar make the garden free. The next one is Wednesday, November 11, and the second is Saturday, December 26. The December date falls the day after one of the garden's holiday closures and three days after the Trail of Lights ends.
The Clubhouse And The Bridge Are Further Out
Up the hill, the Zilker Clubhouse rehabilitation started construction this summer, and the City expects it to finish in Summer 2027. Work on replacing the park's maintenance barn started July 8, 2025, and its project page estimates completion this fall. Sunken Gardens, below the pool spillway, is the furthest out. The City's schedule shows design and permitting through 2028 and construction from 2028 to 2030.
The Barton Springs Road Bridge is the project most 78704 drivers will feel, and it's still in design and environmental review. The City expects construction to start in late 2028. Current concepts show two travel lanes in each direction, bike lanes, wider sidewalks, wider trails under the bridge and room for the Zilker Eagle, all still subject to design and environmental review. The City is holding a community open house on Monday, November 16, from 5 to 7 p.m. Details are on the project's SpeakUp Austin page.
The larger Zilker Park Vision Plan is still where it was. The City's page describes the process as suspended before final Council presentations and labels it "On Hold."
Here's where each building stands as November begins:
- Bathhouse rotunda: construction is finishing. The earliest public opening, per KUT's October reporting, is December.
- Botanical Garden: run by the City since October 1. Its main building may have stayed closed past the planned October 16 reopening.
- Zilker Clubhouse: under construction through Summer 2027.
- Barton Springs Road Bridge: open house November 16, with construction expected to start in late 2028.
The Outdoor Calendar Is Running As Usual
With the buildings in transition, the season depends on the open lawn and the trail, and those are on schedule. The Great Lawn was closed through October for its yearly maintenance after ACL. The City says parts will reopen as work allows, and some of it will stay closed for Trail of Lights.
The Zilker Holiday Tree goes up first. The lighting ceremony is free on Sunday, November 29, at Zilker Park, 2100 Barton Springs Road. Music starts at 5:15 p.m., and the tree lights at 6 p.m. After that, the tree is open for visits from 6 to 10 p.m. nightly through January 1. Parking for the ceremony is free and first come, first served. On Trail of Lights nights, road closures mean you can't drive up to the tree.
The Austin Trail of Lights runs December 10 through 23. General admission is 7 to 10 p.m., and ZIP and Platinum ticket holders can enter at 6 p.m. There are still seven free nights, the same count as last year, but the dates have moved. In 2025, KXAN listed the free nights as December 10, 11 and 12, plus December 15 through 18. This year, December 12 is a paid night. The free run now starts Sunday the 13th and goes through Thursday the 17th.

On paid nights, children 11 and under get in free with a ticketed adult. The organizer's ticket page lists ZIP passes at $20 to $25 and Platinum passes at $95. Advance parking runs $25 to $35. A $10 shuttle pass covers the shuttle from Toney Burger Center, which runs December 12 and December 18 through 23. On the nights the shuttle runs, general admission costs money. For Bouldin households who can walk or bike to the park, the free weeknights avoid both the parking fee and the shuttle.
The Zilker Eagle also keeps running through all of this. Austin Parks Foundation owns and operates the train. It runs Friday through Tuesday, 10 a.m. to 5:45 p.m., with a break from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Fares are $6 plus tax, and children under 2 ride free. The Foundation has ended its first-Friday free Community Hours.
What December Could Add
If the bathhouse schedule holds, the rotunda could open in the middle of the Trail of Lights, while the Botanical Garden goes through its first holiday season under City management. Both depend on the next few weeks. The outdoor dates won't change. The tree lights November 29, the trail opens December 10, and the pool keeps its 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. hours every day except Thursday, when it closes for cleaning from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
